The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, more commonly known as UL Lafayette, is a public research university located in Lafayette, which is the parish seat of Lafayette Parish, situated in the US state of Louisiana, with a population of more than 110 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 4th largest city in the state.
UL Lafayette became known under its current name in 1999 and it was founded in 1899, as an industrial institute. It is a member of the Southeastern Universities Research Association, being renowned for many of its fields of study offered, such as Computer Science, Environmental Science, Francophone Studies, Biological Science and several others. It is the only university in the state that offers PhD in Francophone Studies, Industrial Design and Cognitive Science degrees.
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette is academically organized into 10 colleges and schools, through which it offers its students 80 undergraduate and 29 master's degree programs, including 9 Doctor of Philosophy programs, among which there are: applied language and speech sciences, cognitive science, biology, educational leadership, mathematics and engineering.
The athletic teams from UL Lafayette are known as the Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns, who compete in NCAA's Division I (I FBS for football) Sun Belt Conference, in various sports, including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, tennis, volleyball and several other sports. The softball team is among the university's most successful teams, having won 9 regular season championships, just as many conference tournament championships, as well as having 5 appearances in the Women's College World Series, in '93, '95, '96, 2003 and 2008.
Since it first opened its doors, UL Lafayette has produced numerous notable alumni, among the most resonant names on the list being: Sue Eakin - Louisiana historian, Bradley J. Baker - president, MBA Association, Ernie Alexander - Louisiana state representative, Albert H. Crews - former U.S. astronaut, Alex McCool - manager NASA Space Shuttle Projects Office, Benny Y. C. Hon - mathematician, professor of mathematics, City University of Hong Kong, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
